Beauty in Decay
Food Waste As Material
Natural materials have the opportunity to change the way in which we think about design and how we think about ourselves. Not only are there ways in which design can benefit from the knowledge of the natural world, but there are ways in which perspectives can be changed as well. The nature of food waste - which is subject to decay - raises the question, how can this degradation be incorporated into materials life- end cycle and how can it change our human perspectives?
Starting with the food we eat, there are many ways we can identify relationships between humans and nature. Research shows that some fruits and vegetables exhibit circadian rhythms and can prep their nutrients/defensive compounds according to their predators feeding schedule.[1] Not only are there physiological similarities between humans and the food we eat, but there are also similarities in our biological life cycles as it relates to death and decay. Everything is subject to death, but we often associate this with sadness and unpleasantness. The swatch collection Growing Old, intends to bring awareness to the beauty of impermanence and decay through material exploration of dried fruit and vegetables.

Growing Old is a swatch collection that experiments with using dried fruits and vegetables as material. Because of their transparent nature and intricate detail, light has the opportunity to move through the material in a beautiful way. Looking at a variety of properties such as transparency, rigidity, and malleability, these swatches identify not only material alternative properties, but they also emphasize the beauty of impermanence in design.
